Ginkgo (2024)

About

Title & Year: Ginkgo (2024)

Artist: Victoria Fu

Materials: Painted mural on water silo

Install Date: July 2024

Description: Victoria Fu’s Ginkgo is painted onto a working grain silo that serves the Draft Republic & Tarantula Hill Brewing Co. brewery.  The site is one of the key public space anchors and congregation zones in North City and Ginkgo marks an incredible, visual landmark in this area.

Consistent with Fu’s aesthetic and conceptual approaches with moving image installations, the 360 degree, "all-over" composition has been created using cast shadows of plants illuminated by colored lights. Deep purples, reds, greens, and blues are rich and compelling hues, and further complicate the spaces as defined by form and color. The plants are drawn from medicinal herbs found on walks in San Diego--in this particular case, ginkgo and goldenseal. By fusing pure color with the abstraction of local vegetation, the work is distinctly of Southern California.

Special thanks to Dylan Flaherty, Jordan Readyhough, Matt Rich.
